Federico Boscherini is an Associate Professor of Experimental Physics at the Physics Department of the University of  Bologna. Previously, he was a researcher at the Frascati National Laboratories of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare in Frascati and a post doctoral associate at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA). He studied physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

Prof. Boscherini’s primary scientific interest and expertise lies in the use of synchrotron radiation techniques (primarily X-ray absorption and diffraction, photoemission) to study the physical properties of advanced materials and biostructures at an atomic level. He is part of the group which proposed the Italian beamline “GILDA” at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble and he took part in its design and installation. At the moment he is a frequent user of ESRF and ELETTRA. At ELETTRA he was in charge of a long term project dedicated to the development and use of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study defects and dopants in semiconductors; this research continues to date.

Prof. Boscherini currently acts as the Coordinator of the Bologna research unit of CNISM (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze fisiche della Materia) and he is a member of the panel which assigns funds to physics research project at the University of Bologna (RFO – Ricerca Fondamentale Orientata). He is in charge at the national and local level of research projects funded by the University of Bologna, the Ministry of Research (MIUR), the Institute for Physics of Matter (INFM) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He is a referee for the major journals in the field of condensed matter physics, among which “Physical Review Letters” and “Physical Review B” and is a consultant for the review panels of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Canadian Light Source. He is author of over 160 publications on peer reviewed journals and has held various invited talks at international conferences. He has been chairman of the series of Symposia on “Synchrotron Radiation and Materials Science” at the Spring Meetings of the European Materials Research Society (2002, 2005, 2009 and 2011). He served on the Council of the ESRF Users' Organization (1997 – 2001) and of the Executive Committee of the Italian Synchrotron Radiation Society (2003 – 2007). Since 2005 he serves on the Commission on XAFS of the International Union of Crystallography. He is a member of the Italian Physical Society and of the American Physical Society. Since 2011 he is on the Advisory Editorial board of Nuclear Instruments and Methods B. ).

Along with teaching duties at the undergraduate and graduate level to Physics and Biology students, Prof. Boscherini is regularly invited to lecture at advanced schools in the field of synchrotron radiation, in Italy and abroad. He has served on various examination and selection panels at the local and national level (e.g. entry and final exam of the Ph.D. in physics in Bologna, national competition for researcher and associate Professor positions

Finally, Prof. Boscherini also acts as an industrial consultant in the field of X-ray instrumentation.
